How to Play Bingo 101

What is Bingo?
Bingo is a game of chance dating back to the 16th century where players match randomly drawn balls to tiles on Bingo cards. Known by various names like Beano, B-52, B-56, and Hot Lotto, Bingo remains popular worldwide thanks to its simplicity and the potential to win cash prizes.
Bingo for Beginners
In Bingo, each player receives a card or cards. Each card has a unique grid of 24 randomly numbered spaces, with a free space in the middle and the letters B-I-N-G-O across the top, designating a letter to each vertical column. A Bingo caller draws balls with a combination of letters and numbers from a bin, and players mark any matching spaces on their cards using a marker, dauber or tiles. Electronic Bingo works the same way, only instead of daubing spaces you mark them by pushing a button or tapping your screen.

Getting Bingo
The goal of the game is to be the first to get Bingo by connecting a full line of numbered spaces. As numbers are called, players mark matching spaces off on their Bingo cards. In traditional Bingo, when a player marks five spaces in a row either horizontally, vertically or diagonally, they shout "Bingo!", and win the game. Some types of Bingo allow a "four corners" rule, where a player can mark all four corner spaces to win. In case of a tie, players can either decide who was first or choose a tie-breaker.
Bingo Rules
Bingo rules are simple: Each player must have a Bingo card and a way to mark off numbered spaces as matching numbers are called. When someone calls "Bingo" they must show their card to the caller to verify the win. TIP: Having fewer players increases each player’s chances of winning.
Blackout Bingo
Blackout Bingo, powered by Skillz, is a mobile Bingo game where players compete against a real opponent for real cash and prizes. Both players’ cards are identical, making it a contest of speed rather than a game of chance or luck. Players are only matched to other players of a similar skill level, ensuring a fair competition.
Other Bingo Variations
The way you play Bingo depends on the variation, but all versions follow the same general rules.
Types of Bingo:
- Five-In-A-Line: This is the traditional, most basic version of Bingo and requires players to fill any five numbered spaces in a row on their card before another player does.
- Coverall Bingo: In Coverall Bingo, players have to cover every numbered space on their card before another player does.
- Speed Bingo: Also called 30-Ball Bingo, Speed Bingo is a much faster paced variation of Bingo. Players use a 3X3 card, so winning happens more often.
How to Win
Your chances of winning a game of Bingo depend on three things:
- Your Bingo card or cards
- How many other players are playing
- How well you pay attention
